New Dawn, New Day, New Baby!

We have some great news to share, one of our newest wines has received an exciting accolade from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. In their 2020 review of the world’s 100 most exciting new wine discoveries, Beaumont’s New Baby 2017 was chosen as one of the four wines selected from South Africa. We are beyond thrilled to have this incredible recognition for a wine that is so close to our hearts and represents what we firmly believe in, which is making the best wine from what we grow on the farm in Bot River.

“The Sauvignon Blanc tones are softer and hidden at first. The nose has expressive aromas of green and yellow apple with dusty pear slices and freshly peeled lemons that linger with apple blossoms. The palate shows that the wine is clean and correct with a fresh pomaceous and citrus character upfront, followed by classy mineral tension in the back. The finish is medium long and is refined with a precise focus and balance”, Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 91 points

New Baby was born in 2015 from an idea to create a unique white blend that makes use of all the white varietals on the Farm. Chenin was always going to be at the heart of the blend, but we are very fortunate to have some beautiful old vine vineyards of Sauvignon Blanc and Colombar. In addition to these we have 20-year-old Semillon and Chardonnay vines. Each grape’s role in this blend is vital as we aim to ensure each vintage is a unique and fascinating expression of our vineyards.

From the first vintage we knew we had something special in the bottle. The maiden vintage scored 5 Stars in the Platter Wine Guide and since then subsequent vintages have created fans all over the world. In Germany, Lennark Wenk, a superb sommelier from Hygge Hamburg, who worked the 2015 harvest at Beaumont says it is “such an independent, multi-layered white wine: texture, balance, grip, structured tannin, salty minerals, finesse, seasoning, taut and bundled aromas and subtle fruit are the keywords for this wine, which also sensitively reflects the vintage differences. In my opinion, a masterpiece by Sebastian, who knows how to weave all five white grape varieties into a perfect symbiosis”.

Sadly, the 2017 is now sold out at the Cellar, but we have a cracking new 2018 vintage which will be released this December and there are only 2300 bottles on the shelf so don’t delay!

Tim Atkin in his 2020 South Africa Special Report scored the 2018 vintage at 93 points and said “New Baby is an assemblage of separately fermented Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay and Colombard that consistently delivers more than the sum of its parts. With 25% new wood, this is a spicy, pear and peach skin like white with a hint of blackcurrant leaf and subtle cinnamon spice”

We hope that you enjoy this wine as much as we do!

Sebastian
